Attorney Tyyawdai Baker Graduates from NC Center for Women in Public Service`s 2008 Summer Institute

Ms. Baker prepared for and participated in the interactive, hands-on, high energy workshops over two long weekends this summer to earn her spot at the graduation ceremonies attended by Secretary of State Elaine Marshall, Supreme Court Justice Robin Hudson and Senator Ellie Kinnaird, among others.

Tyyawdi Baker operates Hands Law Office, a general practice firm with her fiancé David W. Hands in NODA where they practice family law, bankruptcy, real estate, criminal and civil litigation.

Ms. Baker has served Mecklenburg County as a member of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community Relations Committee, the Domestic Violence Advisory Board, the Mecklenburg County Bar Board of Directors and the International House Board of Directors, to name only a few. She was recently appointed to the Winston-Salem State University Board of Visitors - where she received her undergraduate education. Ms. Baker is a current candidate for the District Court seat to be vacated by the Honorable Nancy B. Norelli. Ms. Baker attended the institute to gain insight on how she might best further serve both her local community and the state in a leadership role.

The twelve hand-selected candidates from across the state received specific instruction on leadership potential and proper campaigning and fundraising. Additionally, graduates worked to define their personal goals, prepare for interactions with the media and refine their communication skills through public speaking exercises.
